A directed radiation of restricted in space transient fields (pulsed
wave beams) and their scattering on boundaries of layered
metal-dielectric lossy structures is investigated both theoretically and
experimentally. An algorithm for processing space-time experimental data
to determine permittivity, conductivity, slab thickness and
frequency-angular dependence of reflection coefficient of layered
structures is proposed.

A general solution to the problem of radiation from rectangular
aperture antenna excited with transient signal of arbitrary time
dependence and amplitude distribution of current density along the
aperture is obtained taking into account an arbitrary function of
non-synchronous excitation.

A setting for experimental investigations in time domain using
videopulses of hundreds of picosecond duration and developed tapered
slot antennas is created. Parameters of several types of layered
dielectrics and radio-absorbing materials are determined from the
measured time-angular characteristics.
