This thesis is devoted to study the impurity and induced by ionizing
radiation paramagnetic centres in acentric disodered compounds with
trigonal Ca-gallogermanate structure. EPR spectra of
Ca(Sr)3Ga2Ge4O14:Cr, La3Ga5Ge(Si)O14:Cr, Sr(Ca)3Ga2Ge4O14:Mn,
CaxSr3-xGa2Ge4O14:Cr (x=1, 1.5, 2) single crystals, optical absorbtion
and luminescence spectra of Ca(Sr)3Ga2Ge4O14:Mn single crystals have
been investigated, described and analyzed. Influence of high –
temperature treatments (800-1200 K) on the valence state of activator
manganese ions was investigated in differrent atmospheres. The valence
states, the positions of localization of Cr3+ and Mn2+ activator ions,
the parameters of spin-Hamiltonian are established. Crystallografic
models of Cr3+ and Mn2+ impurity centres are proposed and typical
peculiarities of crystal field in positions of localization of these
ions are determined. The paramagnetic centres in Ca(Sr)3Ga2Ge4O14,
CaxSr3-xGa2Ge4O14 (x=1, 1.5, 2) crystals induced by UV- and
X-irradiation have been investigated by the methods of optical and EPR
spectroscopy.

Activator chromium ions incorporate in the Ca(Sr)3Ga2Ge4O14:Cr,
La3Ga5Ge(Si)O14:Cr, CaxSr3-xGa2Ge4O14:Cr (x=1, 1.5, 2) lattices in a
three-valence state in 1a- octahedral positions, as it was founded by
the method of EPR-spectroscopy. In the Ca(Sr)3Ga2Ge4O14:Cr,
CaxSr3-xGa2Ge4O14:Cr (x=1, 1.5, 2) crystals two types of Cr3+ centres
are formed depending on the combination of occupation of the 3f-
tetrahedral position in the first cation coordinative sphere by the Ga3+
and Ge4+ ions. Partial magnetic spectra of such centres have axial and
rhombic symmetry type and their magnetic multiplicity are equal to 1 and
6 respectively. Magnetic axes x and y of the rhombic spectra are a
parallel to the crystallografic directions like to and
type and the magnetic axes z of both of such centres are parallel to the
trigonal axis. Diferencies in intensity and in lineshape of EPR spectra
for both type of centres in Ca3Ga2Ge4O14:Cr and Sr3Ga2Ge4O14:Cr are due
to differencies in occupation of cation position by Ga3+ and Ge4+ ions.
Activator chromium ions form the Cr3+ centres in octahedral positions of
La3Ga5Ge(Si)O14:Cr unit cell. Magnetic spectra of such centres have an
axial symmetry and magnetic multiplicity equal to 1. As have been
established, complex unresolved structure of EPR-spectra lines for the
Cr3+ ions in La3Ga5Ge(Si)O14:Cr is due to the substitutional desodering
in second cation coordinative sphere. Observed EPR-spectra lines of Cr3+
ions in crystals with the trigonal Ca-gallogermanate structure have been
described by the spin-Hamiltonian of the rhombic symmetry for the spin
meaning equal 3/2. Its parameters and their scattering have been
determined. Angular dependencies of the EPR-spectra lines positions and
spliting of spin-energy levels in Zeeman magnetic field for different
sample orientation have been calcullated.

As was established by the methods of optical and EPR spectroscopy,
manganese ions can belong to the unit cell of the Ca- and Sr-
gallogermanates as three-valence ion and as two-valence ion in
1a-position. Correlation Mn2+/Mn3+ is one oder higher for
Sr3Ga2Ge4O14:Mn. High-temperature annealing (T=1000 K) in vacuum leads
to the reducing of some Mn3+ ions to Mn2+ and next annealing in oxygen
atmospher leads to reverse charge. The spin-Hamiltonian parameters and
their scattering have been determined that describe EPR spectrum of Mn2+
(g =1.9983, A =(8.39±0.05) 10-3 nm-1,

In the Ca3Ga2Ge4O14 crystals irradiated at 300 K the additional optical
absorption spectrum have been registered that contains four absorption
bands with maxima at 275, 330, 375 and 500 nm. At the same time the EPR
spectrum is observed to consists of the six lines with DHpp = 23 Oe
width. The investigation of mechanism of accumulation and relaxation of
color centres shows that their number depends nonlinearly on the
radiation dose and is saturated in time. The heating of irradiated
samples up to 380 K leads to disappearance of the EPR spectrum and 330
nm optical absorption band and also causes more distinct 275, 375 and
500 nm bands. Further thermal discoloration leads to synchronous
reduction of the intensity of these bands till to a complete recovery of
the initial absorption spectra. The study of angular dependence of the
EPR spectrum in the (0001), (1210) and (1010) planes shows this spectrum
to correspond to centers of the triclinic symmetry at six
crystallographically equivalent sites , each of lowest symmetry (C1).
The observed EPR spectrum can be described by the spin-Hamiltonian (with
S=1/2) having rhombic symmetry assuming the anisotropic Zeeman
interaction. From the g values measured at various orientations the
principal values and directions of the g-tensor were determined by
diagonalization: gz=2.00290.0005, q=72.3o , j=4.8o;
gx=2.01800.001, q=72.3o, j=94.8o; gy=2.01340.001, q=17.7o,
j=4.8o (the orientation of the x,y,z axes are given with respect to
the [0001], [1210] direction, respectively). We suggest that optical
absorption band with the maximum at 330 nm and EPR spectrum are related
the O–centres in 6g-general positions stabilized by nearest-neighboor
Ge4+ vacancy in 2d- cations positions. Such centres are forming in
UV-irradiated Ca3Ga2Ge4O14:Cr, CaxSr3-xGa2Ge4O14, CaxSr3-xGa2Ge4O14:Cr
(x=1, 1.5, 2) crystals.
