Moslem philologist Ahmad Ibn Faris based on the material of his treatise

The Candidate thesis comprises a study of a treatise by the 10th
century Arab Moslem philologist Ahmad Ibn Faris known under the title
“Fiqh al-lughah wa sunan al-arab fi kalamiha” based on a collation of
categorial apparatus of the Moslem law (fiqh) and classical Arabic
gramarian tradition. The analysis of the treatise proves a typological
isomorphism in the language of description as applied in Islamic law and
traditional Arabic grammar (i.e. in two fiqh’s – al-fiqh al-islami and
fiqh al-lughah). The research method applied by the author is rooted
deep in the long history of Arab linguistic tradition as represented by
its main schools as well as on the foundations of Arab and Islamic
culture.

The thesis is meant as a cross-cultural introduction to the key ideas
and methods of traditional Arabic grammar through going down deeper to
the Islamic roots of this branch of knowledge. The idea is not really
new for the European scholars, however, it has hardly been yet
sufficiently demonstrated. The author has managed to prove that a large
portion, if not all the ideas, methods and terms used by traditional
Arab grammarians have an Islamic prospective. Without such cultural
prospective one will hardly be able to really understand a large number
of issues let alone the methods of language discription, as applied by
the ancient Arab grammarians, that continue to be extensively used by
modern Arab scholars.
