The thesis competing for the candidate degree in Philology. –
Speciality – 10.01.01 – Ukrainian Literature. Shevchenko Institute of
Literature, NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv, 1999.

The thesis deals with the formation and development of the “romance of
the vitaism” ( active romanticism ) in the Ukrainian prose and
emigration literature in the first half of the 20th century. According
to the author”s point of view, this process may be divided into four
periods:

1) formation of the “romance of the vitaism”;

2) active romanticism in its mature period;

3) decadence of the active romanticism;

4) active romanticism of the “second wave”.

The suggested method is confirmed with the concrete textual analysis
considering style dominants of every described period, influence of the
literary environmemt upon style functioning and displaying of the
vitaistic conception in some writers creative works.

The principal results of the work are tested in publications, lecture
courses and may be used in educational practice and Ukrainan literature
of the 20th century scientific researches.
