Sheyko R.V. The social status of the militiaman in the transformational
conditions of the society.

In the dissertation the concept of the social status of the militiaman
is revealed, the system of factors for its estimation is proposed, the
results of the empirical researches of the militia profession prestige
in modern Ukrainian society are adduced. There is also examined the
level of self-estimation of the prestige of the militia profession by
different militiamen categories in the Ukrainian Internal Affairs
Bodies.

The results of the researches allow to make a conclusion that on the one
hand, militia is a powerful organisation which can protect the interests
of those people who need it. But on the other hand, noticed such
characteristics of militia as red tape, self-interest and rudeness,
which decline the effectiveness of activity of Internal Affairs Bodies.

Negative estimates of Ukrainian militia prevail among interviewees and
do not depend on their social characteristics. They believe that militia
does not even interest in the protection of citizens rights. The
declared principle that the main direction of militias work must be to
respect the interests of person and society is not realised in the
activity of militia and bears the character of declaration.

It was discovered that the decline of self-estimation of the prestige
fully depends on one’s service position, which points to a definite
crisis of self-identification with the militia group, the crisis of the
membership.
