Thesis for the scientific degree of candidate of physical and
mathematical sciences, speciality 01.04.07 – solid state physics. –
Kharkov State University, Kharkov, 1999.

The thesis is devoted to complex investigation of temperature
instabilities of physical properties (unit cell parameter, thermal
expansion coefficient, electrical conductivity, the Hall coefficient,
charge carrier mobility) in SnTe bulk crystals and thin films and
SnTe/PbTe superlattices. The aim of the work was to establish effect of
nonstoichiometric defects and other factors on characteristics of the
ferroelectric phase transition (FPT), detect new phase transitions (PT)
caused by defect interactions and reveal specificity of phase transition
manifestation in SnTe thin layers and SnTe/PbTe superlattices. In SnTe
bulk crystals and thin films with high concentration of cation
vacancies, at least two more PT in addition to the known FPT were
observed in the ranges 135-150 K and 200-215 K. They are believed to be
connected with restructuring in the crystal defect subsystem. The
character of manifestation of these PT depends both on native defect
concentration and kinetic factors (rate of heating/cooling, etc.) It was
shown that manifestation of the FPT inherent in SnTe, in SnTe/PbTe
superlattices significantly depends on layer growth orientation. In
SnTe/PbTe superlattices with strained layers, superconductivity with the
critical temperature ~3.4. K was detected. Introduction of misfit
dislocations onto SnTe/PbTe interfaces led to suppression of
superconductivity.
